Checklist for ELCA Synods

Synod LRC Team

·         Organize green team and plan for sustaining your efforts over time

·         Plan overall strategies for greening synod and its congregations

·         Set-up a training team to go out to congregations

·         Seek cooperation with other social justice committees and programs of the synod

·         Have presence on synod website/ publications and promote what congregations are doing

·         Seek grants from local foundations for Earth care in your synod



·         Incorporate care for creation worship into synod assembly services

·         Encourage congregations to celebrate special days, e. g. Earth Day and a Blessing of the Animals

·         Host synod-wide or area-wide worship service on special days

·         Encourage the congregational celebration of the Season of Creation (;

·         Carry out Earth-friendly worship practices at synodical and congregational levels.



·         Workshops at Synod conventions

·         Care for creation themes for professional leadership conferences and synod assemblies

·         Promote and circulate the six-part video series “Earthbound.”

·         Offer green congregation training events by synod or cluster levels

·         Promote Lutheran theology as support for Earth-care: Study social statements


Building and Grounds

·         Green the synod office and property

·         Make synod gatherings into “green events” with best environmental practices

·         Support the Energy Stewards Program (LRC sponsored program for congregations)

·         Promote the Cool Congregation Program for members in their homes


Discipleship at home

·         Request that synod employees make a covenant with creation

·         Promote events for personal Earth-care. Offer resources for devotional practices.

·         Sponsor events that offer renewed relationships with nature


Public Witness

·         Sponsor workshop to inform about and encourage advocacy

·         Identify eco-justice issues in your area and organize to address them

·         Encourage congregations to take leadership in greening local communities

·         Participate in ecumenical and interfaith organizations working to care for Earth

·         Encourage community gardening, Community Supported Agriculture, and fair trade purchasing

·         Develop relationships around environmental issues with companion synods here and abroad



·         Become an LRC synod and adopt the synod affirmation statement
