Camp Mount Luther: A Commitment to Care for God's Creation

Camp Mount Luther in Mifflinburg, PA now has a standing committee that will be tasked with looking at environmental stewardship. Camp Mount Luther’s Board of Directors passed a resolution to establish the Care of Creation and Environmental Sustainability committee at their meeting April 29, 2014.  The board has committed to the care for God’s creation and wanted to ensure that this important work was part of their normal governance of the camp.

According to Chad Hershberger, Camp Mount Luther’s Executive Director, “We’ve been working on this for over two years.  The idea was sparked after a few of our board members and I attended ACA’s [American Camping Association’s] Eco-Conference.  We felt that it would be good to have a committee that regularly looks at these issues.”

The board also recognized the resources and guidelines published by Lutherans Restoring Creation and plan to consider philosophies in the camp’s worship, educational programs, and buildings and grounds.  The resolution is the first step in establishing the committee.  The board will add the appropriate descriptions to their bylaws and form the committee at an upcoming meeting.
