Peter Bakken, ESI Co-Director

Peter Bakken is Coordinator for Public Policy at the Wisconsin Council of Churches.  

He earned his B.A. in English and Religion from Concordia College, and his Ph. D. in Theology from the University of Chicago.  His dissertation was titled “The Ecology of Grace: Ultimacy and Environmental Ethics in Aldo Leopold and Joseph Sittler.”  He was a member of the task force that produced the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America social statement, “Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope and Justice.”  

From 1991 to 2005 he was Coordinator of Outreach and Research Fellow at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies.  His publications include Church on Earth: Grounding Your Ministry in a Sense of Place (with Jeff Wild; Augsburg Fortress 2009); Ecology, Justice and Christian Faith: A Guide to the Literature (co-compiled with J. Ronald Engel and Joan Gibb Engel; Greenwood Press, 1995) and Evocations of Grace: Writings on Ecology, Theology and Ethics by Joseph Sittler (co-edited with Steven Bouma-Prediger, Eerdmans, 2000).  He also contributed to Ethics for a Small Planet: A Communications Handbook on the Ethical and Theological Reasons for Protecting Biodiversity (The Biodiversity Project, 2002); Finding the Center of the World (Ice Cube Press, 2003); and Earth and Word: Classic Sermons on Saving the Planet (David Rhoads, ed.; Continuum, 2007).  

He also serves as State Coordinator of Wisconsin Interfaith Power & Light and as website manager for Lutherans Restoring Creation.

Born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota, he currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with his wife, daughter, and four cats, where they (not including the cats) are members of Advent Lutheran Church (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).
